Memories
of Ceylon
A childhood remembered. A country never forgotten.
The Ceylon I Remember
This is not a history of Ceylon. It is something far more personal — a collection of memories of the island where my life began.
These are memories of childhood and family, of familiar streets and distant journeys, of schooldays, friendships and the small adventures that seemed enormous at the time. They are memories of people and places, some still with us and others now belonging to another age.
Ceylon has changed, as all countries must. Today it is Sri Lanka. But somewhere within memory there remains another island — the Ceylon of my childhood.
Where Memory Takes Me
Childhood
Schooldays, games, small adventures and those ordinary moments which, many years later, become some of the memories we treasure most.
Family
Parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, family homes and gatherings — the people whose lives became woven into my own.
The Island
Colombo and beyond: familiar streets, railway journeys, beaches, hill country and the sights, sounds and rhythms of the Ceylon I remember.

Latest Memory
The newest memory added to these pages.
The island I knew belongs to another time, but memory has a curious way of keeping certain places alive.
These pages are my way of returning now and then — to the streets, the journeys, the people and the small moments that made Ceylon the island of my childhood.
